The study of General Mathematics provides opportunities for students to engage with concepts that will enable them to become mathematical thinkers in the real world. Students who choose this course wish to extend their mathematical skill beyond Year 10 but whose future pathways do not require abstract mathematics like Calculus.
General Mathematics incorporates a practical approach that equips learners for their needs as future citizens. Students will learn to ask appropriate questions, map out pathways, reason about complex solutions, set up models and communicate in different forms. They will experience the relevance of mathematics to society. They will use their knowledge of mathematics to develop a mathematical mindset to understand, analyse and take action in real-world issues.
The topics in this course reinforces prior knowledge and further develops Mathematics from Year 10. The major domains include Number and Algebra, Measurement and Geometry, Statistics, Networks and Matrices. The use of this knowledge will find solutions in practical problems and explore real-world phenomena.
